The Canning Stock Route in Western Australia is one of the most remote and challenging 4WD tracks in the world. Spanning around 1,850km from Halls Creek to Wiluna, this legendary trail offers travellers a unique journey through the stunning landscapes of the Australian outback. This itinerary will help you prepare for and navigate this epic action and adventure route safely and enjoyably.

Preparation Tips

Vehicle Preparation: Before setting off, ensure your vehicle is in top condition. Equip it with heavy-duty suspension, durable tires, and a long-range fuel tank. Carry spare parts such as tires, a fan belt, and a fuel filter, and consider installing a second battery for additional power.

Essential Supplies: Pack enough food and water for the entire trip, plus extra for emergencies. The Canning Stock Route has limited resupply points, so plan for at least 20 litres of water per person per day. Bring a comprehensive first aid kit, satellite phone, GPS, and detailed maps.

Permits and Permissions: Obtain the necessary permits to travel through Indigenous lands and sites. These can be acquired from the Western Australian Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage.

Day 1-3: Halls Creek to Well 33

Wolfe Creek Crater: A short detour from the route, Wolfe Creek Crater is one of the largest meteorite craters in the world. It's a fascinating site for geology enthusiasts and makes for a great early stop and photo opportunity.

Wells 1-15: The early stages of the route feature a series of historic wells originally used to water cattle. While many wells are now dry, they provide a glimpse into the history of the Canning Stock Route. Camp near Well 15, where you'll find a scenic spot to set up for the night.

Day 4-7: Well 33 to Durba Springs

Kunawarritji (Well 33): Refuel and restock at Kunawarritji, one of the few resupply points along the route. The community store offers basic supplies and fuel.

Durba Springs: Continue south to Durba Springs, a beautiful oasis surrounded by red rock formations. This area is perfect for a rest day, allowing you to relax and explore the natural beauty of the springs.

Day 8-10: Durba Springs to Well 46

Wells 34-46: The route between Durba Springs and Well 46 features some of the most remote and challenging sections. Drive carefully through the sand dunes and rocky terrain, and keep an eye out for wildlife. Camp at Well 46, where you'll find a serene spot to unwind and take in the stark beauty of the region.

Day 11-14: Well 46 to Wiluna

Well 46 to Well 51: As you approach the end of your journey, the landscape begins to change. The track becomes less rugged, and you'll encounter more vegetation and wildlife. The wells in this section are mostly dry, but they mark your progress towards Wiluna.

Wiluna: Arrive in Wiluna, the southern end of the Canning Stock Route. This small town offers basic amenities, including fuel, food, and accommodations. Time to celebrate the completion of your epic adventure and take some time to reflect on the incredible journey.

On the Road Tips

Driving Tips: Drive cautiously and maintain a steady pace. The track can be unpredictable, with soft sand, rocky sections, and steep dunes. Lowering your tire pressure will help navigate sandy areas more effectively.

Communication: Regularly check in with someone back home using your satellite phone. Inform them of your location and progress to ensure your safety.

Environmental Considerations: Respect the environment and local communities. Carry all your waste out with you, and stick to marked tracks to minimise your impact on the fragile ecosystem.

The Canning Stock Route is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. With careful planning and preparation, you can safely enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and rich history of this iconic Australian journey.
