Interior trends set to shake up 2017

We, at Mater Prize Home, aspire to create luxurious home interiors that inspire and captivate with their modern charm. In order to deliver that winning look, we like to maintain awareness of alternating trends in interior design.

This coming year is set to see a dramatic swing in interior styling—the current popular Scandinavian look with its emphasis on pastel shades is soon to be eclipsed by a darker, more dramatic feel.

Here are some of the new interior trends we’ll be seeing in 2017 and the sorts of features you might expect to see in our prize homes in the future:

What’s IN

Terracotta

Terracotta as a colour and texture is likely to feature more prominently in interior spaces, adding character and warmth. Terracotta tiles may appear on fireplace hearths and in bathrooms, replacing the current cool/white tiled look.

Cork is ideal for absorbing noise in increasingly large, open plan homes and adds warmth and texture to spaces. We may see this material used to clad entire feature walls or to decorate floors.

Darker woods

There will be a move towards darker tones in furniture in the coming year. Expect woods such as walnut, mahogany and dark oak to make a comeback.

Dark green

We say goodbye to navy and midnight blues and usher in dark shades of green. Rooms painted in dark green create a wilderness-like backdrop for decorative pieces such as tanned leathers, reindeer furs and brass lamps. Dark green also works incredibly well with dark timbers to make a space feel decadent.

Jewel tones

While pastel shades are currently dominating colour palettes, they will soon be eclipsed by jewel tones inspired by metals, space, stars, clouds and the cosmos. Sheer fabrics and floaty silks will create a lightness and soft romantic element to this trend and metallics, metals, raw-cut quartz and opal will add a dash of sparkle.

Upholstered bedheads

Already a staple in luxury hotel bedrooms and celebrity homes, elaborate upholstered bedheads are set to replace the timber bed frames currently in the market. Whether you opt for a classic neutral colour with buttons or a plush one in velvet, a bedhead is an easy way to add instant glamour to a bedroom.

Woven baskets

If you’re in need of a linen hamper, rustic planter or holdall solution for all your bits around the house, you’ll be in luck soon. Woven baskets are making their way into homes again as decorative pieces.

What’s OUT

Copper

Shiny copper and rose gold have reached their curtain call, although more rustic, industrial forms of these metals will remain. There will be a move towards burnished metals and black steel in the home.

Marble

With marble everywhere in the mass-produced homewares market, a sharp decline in interest is likely to happen soon. Instead, we can look forward to raw, earthy textures in the home such timber, clay and wicker.

Quote artworks

After years in the spotlight and now a bit cliché, artworks featuring quotes are losing popularity with consumers. The ‘Keep calm’ posters have had their day and we’re ready for something fresh.

Blonde wood

It’s time to bid farewell to blonde and lighter wood tones. Our fingertips are all red and raw from sanding.

Pineapples

Yes that’s right, pineapple anything. Beat the masses and put it all on eBay now.
