Jo is a wife and mother of three teenage children and was just 48 years old when she received her shock breast cancer diagnosis.
"A biopsy confirmed that I had an aggressive invasive carcinoma. Within a week, I’d had lumpectomy surgery at the Mater Redlands. Initially, I was told I was going to have the lumpectomy followed by radiation treatment however, unfortunately pathology results revealed that a full breast mastectomy was required."
"One minute you’re told you have cancer and the next you’re having breast cancer surgery. You haven’t really had time to process the shock. When you’ve got three children, you want to see them finish school and grow up. It is a very emotionally vulnerable time.”
Jo is very thankful for the care she received from her medical team at Mater and is grateful for the years of medical research that she herself benefited from.
“I guess during cancer treatment, it forces you to stop and reassess life. It’s made me want to slow down and give back, and for me that’s by volunteering and raising funds for research.”
Each ticket that you buy is bringing hope and healing to patients like Jo, through supporting vital cancer research and exceptional patient care, and of-course could see you winning a stunning Mater Prize Home.
