With an 800-acre cattle property, 20 sheep, two alpacas, five goats, 10 chooks, two dogs and 200 beehives on the way, Monique Perry is no longer the “city girl” she once described herself as.
This rural setting is proving a healing space for Monique and her loving family.
In 2021, Monique, 43, received a devastating diagnosis: triple-negative breast cancer, a particularly aggressive and fast-growing form of the disease, known for its high risk of metastasis and recurrence.
Having lost her mother to ovarian cancer at just 52, and herself being a registered nurse inclined to “look at the numbers”, Monique was aware of the dire odds she faced with her own cancer diagnosis.
A life-saving immunotherapy trial, conducted by Mater Research, gave Monique a miraculous intervention that she and her family had hoped and prayed for. Following her treatment journey that included chemotherapy, a mastectomy, radiation and a full hysterectomy, Monique was able to return home to her family cancer-free.
Last January, Monique, reached a significant milestone, two years cancer-free. She continues to have bi-annual ultrasounds and has returned to nursing.
“If I could give them a million bucks, I would. That’s how I feel. I want to get that message out about the misconception with trials...don’t be scared of a trial, I have never felt more supported in my life.”
Mater researchers are working tirelessly to develop safer, and new treatment options for cancer patients. When traditional treatment options do not work, clinical trials can provide hope for so many cancer patients.
Every Cars for Cancer ticket that you buy is supporting cancer research at Mater and helps women like Monique, by enabling them to access world-leading treatment options in their fight with cancer.
