The Mustang Is Coming

One of the richest motoring heritages in history is getting ready to gallop across Australia, and the hype is real.

The Ford Mustang has developed a cult following across the world with iconic looks, legendary performance and that oh-so-recognisable pony badge.

The Mustang was originally developed in part to help Ford America combat the low sales of the 2-seat Thunderbird. Ford needed an affordable, good looking car with the performance to back it, and in 1964 the day the car was “officially” revealed. Ford had positive reviews in 2,600 newspapers and a Mustang even featured in the 1964 Bond classic, Goldfinger.

Ford’s original sales forecast for the Mustang’s first year was 100,000—this prediction was blown out of the water just 3 months into production and Ford went on to build a staggering 1 million Mustangs in the first 18 months.

The Mustang has been produced in many shapes, sizes and variations during its illustrious career—fastback, hardtop and convertibles; small and fast, big and luxurious; GTs, Mach 1s, Boss 302s and Boss 429s or the legendary Shelby range. Ask any Mustang enthusiast what they’re favourite Mustang is and no doubt they’ll give you an exact year model and variant.

One thing has remained constant—the pony’s ability to excite.

It may explain why, as Ford makes final preparations to launch the Mustang in Australia, demand for the American classic is so high that die-hard fans are parting with hard earned deposits despite an almost 2 year wait until their model will be ready to collect.
